How about we finish what we started? If you haven’t read the genesis of it, you may catch up here. Question for the day is:
AFTER LUTHER, HOW DID THE BIBLE BECOME CHAPTERS AND VERSES?
I’m sure by now you’re aware the original manuscripts of the Bible did not come with verses and chapters. A man by name Cardinal Caro began the process from 1244 to 1248A.D. This was while he was creating a Latin Vulgate Concordance to help when looking up scriptures.
However, the divisions we use now was done by STEPHEN LANGTON, Archbishop of Canterbury, who inserted chapters in the Wycliffe English Bible in 1382 even though he started work in 1227A.D before Cardinal Caro.
The interesting story however, is that of ROBERT ESTIENNE/ ROBERT STEPHENS otherwise known as Stephanus. Robert’s son, Henri, finished the project in 1594 after his father’s death and reported in Latin- that his father put in the verse numbers in 1551 while travelling “inter equitandum” from Paris to Lyon and back. ” Interequitandum” literally means “ON HORSEBACK”. So as you’d expect, there were funny stories of how the verses came about-
– that a verse was created every time the horse would bump. Lol! 😂
The proper translation however more likely means “while travelling by horse” or simply “while on a journey.” Bobbie would stop at inns and stay up all night inserting verses. He did all that work in a week-and-half to two weeks! Only at night! So tell me again, how many books in the bible have you read in your many years of being a Christian? 🤔🤔
While you’re pondering on your unpardonable shame or otherwise commendable progress, permit me to end with a few statistics about the bible:
1. The Bible was written over a period of 1,600years (from 1500B.C to 100A.D) by approximately 40 different authors.
2. There are 1189 chapters and 31,173 verses in the Bible.
3. Only five of the 66 books of the bible do not have chapters or verses: Obadiah, Philemon, 2 John, 3 John, and Jude.
4. The longest book is Psalms (150chapters), shortest is 3 John (299 words).
5. Longest chapter is Psalm 119 with 176verses (that’s a lot!); shortest is Psalm 117 with only 2verses!
6. Longest verse is Esther 8:9 ( 90 words in one verse!) and shortest is John 11:35 (Jesus wept!)
7. The middle chapter is debated between Psalm 117 and Psalm 118.
8. Finally, guess what? The Bible is the MOST STOLEN BOOK in the world! Did they not see the ‘Thou shall not steal’ part? 😂🤷🏽♀
Well Guess who’s Bible is tightly tucked in her armpit? Yup, you guessed right!
